Nursing Homes Essay

For many of us we have a place that we go to, to rest, relax, and sleep a place that’s filled with memories, laughter, tears, and family a place we call home. Then we have the people such as the elderly that is forced or persuaded to believe that their place of comfort where they shared in memories with their family and love ones in their home is no longer suitable to meet their demanding needs due the illness and capabilities. So, their love ones take them on a tour to this place that tries to imitate a familiar place, but are far from feeling like home. What is this place you may ask?! A nursing home that is â€Å"a home away from home†, really? In my opinion Nursing homes do not benefit the ones that it’s design to help, rehabilitate, and care for but to strip the elderly of their dignity, sense of belonging, and respect. Many elderly people are at times helpless and really depending heavily on the individual who was hired to help them with day-to-day activiti es that we may take for granted. We wake up every day get out of bed, go to the restroom, and dress ourselves without any assistance, but the elderly do not have the opportunity to do the same day-to-day activities without waiting tirelessly on the people who seem to have forgotten that the elderly are humans. I have personally experience the careless and unthinkable acts of the people who work at the nursing home from ignoring the elderly who is screaming desperately from the depths of their soul to the top of their lungs for help! Yet the workers walk on by as if the sounds of help are sounds of sweet humming birds singing. As we freely walk to the restroom and cleanse ourselves the elderly waits upon the answer of their call button that seems to go unanswered until the elderly has no choice, but to release all that they were holding onto themselves and their beds. A lot of families think that they are doing their elderly love ones a good deed by sending them to a place that portrays to be a loving and caring because the family feel that they are unable to provide the round the clock care that their love one’s now need. But little do they know the place that they are sending their love one’s is not the place that appears to be, in my experience you have to ensure that your love one is receiving the care that the nursing homes promise to deliver by making daily visits to show the workers that this particular resident has a family that care and visit daily. When the workers see that the residents have family that comes daily the worker tends to answer pages and stay on top of what their job consist  upon. However, if you are a family that don’t visit your love one daily but just on holidays your elderly love one is more at risk of neglect then the motto of most nursing homes â€Å"We want those special members of your family to become equally special members of ours. We want to relieve the anxiety and frustration you may be experiencing by providing a nursing home community of constant support, attention and personalized care. Above all, we want to serve each person entrusted to us with compassion, dignity, purpose and respect.†

Since Tanglewood only promotes from within, the entry level position of store associates does not appeal to many applicants. College graduates with management degrees are hesitant to start at a low position and work their way up. Many want the managerial position without putting in the work. Action Plan Based on Table 1. 1, it is forecasted that Tanglewood will need to hire over 4,200 employees. Since Tanglewood has a policy of promoting internally, most of the positions that will be filled will be store associates. It is believed that Tanglewood will need 3,995 store associates, 90 shift leaders, 156 department managers, 21 assistant store managers, and 5 store managers. In order to meet Tanglewood’s needs, here is the plan of action: -Tanglewood will hire 3,995 employees to fill store associate positions. Even though this is an entry level position, we will try to make it as appealing to applicants as we can. It is perceived that entry level sales positions are long hours, low pay, and frequent conflict with lower-level employees. These perceptions are partially correct, but we can appeal to applicants by giving them information about the Tanglewood operational plan. Tanglewood believes that it is very important to have complete employee involvement. Employees are involved with formulating methods for running their departments, as well having profit-share benefits, and weekly meetings allow all employees to voice their opinions. The management positions will be filled by experienced associates and other lower management employees. Based on Table 1. Comparing Incumbency to Availability and Annual Placement Goals, in each section (store associates, shift leaders and department managers) there is a goal for either minorities or females. No particular segment has a fulfillment of both females and minorities. This pattern suggests that possible each department focuses on one or the other, but not both. Once they have reached their current goal, they should work hard to maintain that goal. Based on the analysis and affirmative action plan, I think that Tanglewood should adjust their recruiting and promotion practices. It has been well known that Tanglewood promotes from within. What will they do if a majority of the minorities do not continue working for Tanglewood as a sales associate? Due to their policy, higher management positions will not be likely to be filled by minorities if there are a small amount of minorities to choose from. Tanglewood needs to not only meet the minimum goal when hiring minorities and woman, but exceed that goal. Their policy of internal promotions can be a problem when dealing with minorities because of the reason recently discussed. There are many advantages of internal promotions, such as employee knowledge of Tanglewood. Tanglewood would like to hire those that can start lower at shift level and move up the chain and have college background. Tanglewood has to look at the percentage of employees needed each year for each position. Tanglewood wants to make sure there is a long term relationship with the employees, allowing them to grow within the company. Hiring and promoting from within helps with filling in gaps. The other way is hiring temporary employees. Question 2 The only one I can tell that is out of line is the minority availability for store associates. The incumbency percent is below 80% and they have no goal set. This pattern shows that they are not hiring minorities giving them a chance to grow within the company. This means that minority shift leaders and managers will be extremely low. Concert review of the Train and Mat Kearney Show at Ravinia Festival in Chicago Illinois - Essay Example A unique feature of this venue is that the pavilion itself is already elevated on a natural terrain so that the viewers do not have to crane their necks or push towards the front of the concert in order to have a good look at their performing band. This ease of viewing added greatly to the overall experience as from the concert experiences I have had, it can often be frustrating to attempt to maintain a comfortable distance from the performance while still being able to have good visibility and not being crushed by the crowd. With respect to the concert lighting, the concert fell short. This was not necessarily due to a lack of proper planning but due to the fact that the performance took place outdoors. As such, most lighting displays need adequate indoor facilities in order to project the lights onto the stage instead of from the stage to the stage. Therefore, by nature of the venue, the lighting left something to be desired as the performers were illuminated in what only seemed li ke a two dimensional way. To be fair, in order to achieve proper lighting, it would have been necessary to anchor multiple high powered lights in and around the area that the concert goers were viewing the show. This would have caused further inconvenience due to the hassle of draped power cords and the non visibility that would have been a problem to those seated or standing behind such anchored lights. With rock concerts, the venue has a heavy bearing as to the overall ability of the lighting and sound to mirror the same type of experience that might be available to the concertgoer in an indoor setting. As such, with respect to the overall sound level and equipment used, the organizers were limited with what they could do; instead having to sacrifice by setting up a barrage of speakers on the front lines of the pavilion in order to ensure that the sound was loud enough to reach those at the very back of the concert area. Such a technique is effective, however; it can make the nois e level somewhat unbearable for those that wish to be in the front rows of the concert. This was very much the case as I attempted to get a closer view of the performance I was appalled at the overall noise level that was coming from the very front of the concert. It was uncomfortable in the extreme to spend more than a very few moments in such a setting. This fact helped to somewhat reduce the overall effectiveness of the concert; however, it must be noted that as described earlier, such techniques are just part and parcel of what having an outdoor concert necessarily entails and could not have likely been improved by another band performing under the same conditions. With respect to overall accessibility, the concert also scored well in my perspective. Due to the fact that there was plenty of room to move around, high stage visibility even from areas far removed from the performance and an outdoor setting, individuals, even with disabilities, could easily gain entry, have room to move around, and enjoy the concert without being impeded by the setting. Using the color red along with the message of revolution tends to make the advertisement generate a strong appeal with audiences. The urgency of the message expressed by the word â€Å"now† tends to raise the bar even more. The advertisement uses other strongly communist symbols as well including the M&M mascot and the volley of people at the bottom. The red colored M&M mascot symbolizes a turn into the communist fold. The management is linked to processes and structures of the organization while the leadership is to the vision and values of the organization. According to Buhler, (2001), leadership is more focused on revitalizing individuals performance. Management, on the other hand, is more absorbed on checking their performance levels. The keys of any successful organization are the quality of its management and leadership skills. In a fast changing world, organizations are increasingly dependent on good management and leadership style to improve their business which somehow supports organizational productivity. 1.1.2 Strategic Management As per Parthasarthy, (2007), strategic management is a series of long-term decisions and actions taken by managers in which they select and implement strategies with a purpose of building the firms strengths through market positioning and/or accumulation of internal resources that will give the firm an advantage over rivals. Strategic management is said to be an area in an organization which deals with the major intended and emergent initiatives taken by managers on behalf of policy makers. It is mostly about the processes. 1.1.3 Leadership Drucker, (1986), refers leadership as a lifting of peoples vision to a higher sight, the raising of their performance to a higher standard, the building of their personality beyond its normal limitations. As per Parthasarthy, (2007), leadership broadly refers to the ability of managers to conceive an inspiring vision, formulate goals, articulate them, and successfully guide a firm toward the envision future. 1.2 Case Study ( HM, Hennes and Mauritz) HM is well known as a successful and expansive Swedish fashion group. Today, it operates in 38 countries and has 76,000 employees throughout Europe, North America and Asia. The company offers a range of clothing, cosmetic, footwear and accessories for men, women, children and teenagers as stated in Ideas and Thoughts, (2009). The business runs by strong values as commercial mindset, simplicity, constant improvement, cost consciousness and entrepreneurship. The CEO of HM is Mr. Stefan Persson (born 4.10.1947), since 1982 Mr. Stefan has been the main shareholder of HM. In 2010, he is second richest person in Sweden and 13th richest person in the world. In 2009 his son Mr. Karl-Johan Persson took over as president and CEO of HM. The management strategy is linked with its leader, CEO of HM. So far the vision of leadership is implemented with certain strategies to increase 10-15% in the number of stores every year, which would be founded internally. The aim is to increase sales in existing stores, while focusing on quality and continued profitability, 1.2.1 The impact of management and leadership styles on strategic decision. The objective of HM is fashion and quality at the best price. As per stated by Ideas and Thoughts, (2009), HM focuses on three main aspects of business concept which are: Price Control, this means, the company is constraining the number of merchants purchasing in bulk, depending on the massive proficiency in the design, the company is also ensuring to obtain goods the best production markets, and being conscious of the cost at all times while preserving the best distribution manufacturers. Design Control, merchandise are designed within the company and manufacturing is totally contract out. Quality Control, the management is focused with the essentiality of the quality with wide-ranging testing and making sure of the least nature damage. As a leading company of fashion and retail business they always have to boost their business strategy among the competitors. The strategy of HM has been developing along with continuous business expansion, price competitiveness and profitability and reduction of lead time. In terms of expansion, the company has expanded largely around 2,000 stores in the recent years and they also extended in business like home wares and online shopping store. Talking about price competitiveness, HM do business with right merchandise from the right production markets, being cost-conscious at all levels and maintaining effective distribution producers. Hence, quality products are be sold in an affordable price that can always beat the competitors while making profit. Furthermore, HM is using IT system to control sales and the stocks, for the company to react quickly whenever new trends are identified and to avoid procurement of goods which are not appreciated by the market. Likewise, HM relies on effi cient and integrated systems for inventory management which have been able to reduce lead times while ensuring sufficient stock management. HM is leading the way in following a strategy of vertical integration with distribution network. This strategy has allowed the company to directly collect and fully exploit information about sales and customers in order to improve and accelerate response to the market. Without the effective implementation of those would make the company paralyzed and unproductive. 1.2.2 Adaptation of Leadership Styles on different situation HM management is performing a democratic leadership wherein staffs are encouraged to be involved in any activities pertaining to achieving a certain goal. In addition, open communication is present between the management and the staffs that would somehow break some grudges with one another. As part of it, meetings and trainings for both business and personal development with provided feedbacks for ones improvement are also practiced. HM is committed to providing a workplace environment that offers employees opportunities to express their initiative and ideas. Team work, communication, respect and sharing of the responsibilities make the workplace unique and empowering. (HM UK,2008) Through the business strategies of HM, the organization continues to grow up and leading as one of the top worldwide fashion and retail business. The management of HM is comprehensible and determined to achieve the objective which is to be a leader in fashion and retail world for long. 1.3 Conclusion Strategic Management and Leadership play an essential part of the organization. Having strategies without good leadership is worthless. I believe that strategies are formulated and be implemented by the management with good leadership to fulfil the vision of the organization and for the purpose of productivity that would somehow makes the organization liquid. With the vision of being the leader in fashion retail, HM always consider the values that they are keeping like, the fast pace constant improvement, common sense, initiative, believing in people, being straightforward, cost conscious and teamwork. These values served as a guideline for them to work harmoniously without forgetting how to be effective and efficient individuals. It is my recommendation that HM should continue to provide motivation and incentive packages to all the employees for them to have more spirit to work effectively for the benefit of the organization.
